Judicial Mental Health Advocate
Marquetta is the Judicial Mental Health Patient Advocate for Wapello County and the following counties: Appanoose, Davis, and Mahaska. Judicial Mental Health Advocate assignment to persons under commitment is determined by the person’s legal residency. Legal residency is determined by the South Central Behavioral Health Region office.

Additional Information
A person can be placed under a mental health commitment (court ordered) to a hospital for treatment purposes if the person is ‘seriously mentally impaired’. There are three primary principles to determine this:
- a person is now suffering from a recognizable mental illness, excluding mental retardation
- the person’s insight and judgment into the need for treatment is at this time is impaired
- the person has demonstrated a danger to themselves or others
